Latest on the Lloyd: June 2025

You Asked, We Answered

The Indiana Department of Transportation heard from customers that pavement markings on the Lloyd needed updating. We are glad to share that as part of the Lloyd4U project, in June crews began embedding high-contrast pavement markings into the Lloyd Expressway road surface.

These grooved markings use an alternating combination of black and white markings to provide improved contrast with the concrete and enhance safety. The contrast should improve visibility at sunrise and sunset.

The markings aren’t painted. They are wet reflective preformed plastic markings that are grooved into the pavement.

“These type of contrast markings, especially on new concrete pavement, are highly visible at night and during wet conditions, making it safer for both motorists and vehicles with automated lane-keeping features,” said Senior Engineer of Signals & Markings Joe Bruno.

Work Starting at Burkhardt Road and Cross Pointe Blvd.

With work at Stockwell complete, our crew has moved east. The outside lane of eastbound Lloyd Expressway will be closed between Green River Road and I-69. With additional impacts to traffic patterns (see detailed map) in place for the next four months. The restrictions are to accommodate construction of dual displaced left turns at Burkhardt Road and Cross Pointe Boulevard. Two lanes will always remain open for eastbound travel. Right hand turns from northbound Burkhardt to eastbound Lloyd will be restricted with lane restrictions on both sides of Burkhardt. Right turns from northbound Cross Pointe to eastbound Lloyd will also be restricted in the future.

Construction will occur in three phases throughout 2025 and 2026, with the first phase taking place now through November. All construction areas will be protected with traffic barrels and/or temporary concrete barrier walls. Drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes, anticipate delays, and consider off-peak travel times.

Ongoing work:

  • Ramps for westbound Lloyd Expressway onto southbound U.S. 41 and southbound U.S. 41 onto the westbound Lloyd closed for approximately three weeks.
  • Westbound University Parkway double-ramp closures continue through mid-July.

Beaming with Pride

The Lloyd4U crews achieved new heights that are impressive to see from up high as they make progress in completing the new Lloyd Expressway bridge in the westbound travel lanes over Tekoppel Avenue.

Part of the Lloyd Westside Improvements, crews successfully installed the foundation for the new lanes.

Five new bridge beams were staged, lifted into place and installed to accommodate road widening.

Bridge work on Tekoppel will continue through much of the early summer while paving activities have already begun. (You can watch a video here of work being done.)

The new and improved westbound lanes are expected to open later this year prior to work beginning on the eastbound lanes.

Innovative Intersection Update

We are happy to share the successful opening of the improvements at Stockwell and the Lloyd Expressway. Traffic is moving smoothly, as anticipated, through the new design.

Thank you to all those who were able to attend and learn about the new and improved Stockwell Road intersection at our open houses. INDOT and members of the Lloyd4U project team hosted two educational open houses at Harper Elementary School on Wednesday, June 4. Residents and motorists were able to walk through a map simulation of a displace left turn.

Hybrid refers to two innovations at one site. The redesigned Lloyd Expressway features a displaced left turn on the north side and a median U-turn-style boulevard left turn on the south side with a wide enough shoulder to accommodate large vehicles’ turn radius.
